Laser Eye Surgery Increases in Popularity
The American Association of Professional Eyecare Specialists (AAPECS), reports that 85% of LASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision after their surgery. Ninety-three percent achieve 20/40 visual acuity or better through LASIK. Months after the procedure the patient’s eye health can continue to improve resulting in even clearer vision.
Most of the population greatly benefits from traditional LASIK. Here are the recommendations for the perfect candidate for LASIK:
- 18 years of age or older
- Healthy corneas
- No pregnancy or nursing
- No diabetes or other systemic illness
- No autoimmune disease
- Your prescriptions have been the same within the last year
- No medical problems related to the eyes
- No drugs that suppress your immune system
- You have a myopic refraction up to -12 diopters.
- You have a Hyperopic refraction up to +6 diopters
- Your degree of Astigmatism is up to 4 diopters.
Not everyone is a perfect candidate for LASIK. Alternative laser eye procedures have also increased in popularity. These options include:
- PRK or Photo-Refractive Keratectomy
- Lasek
- Conductive Keratoplasty
