Toric IOLs are premium intraocular lenses that are specially designed to treat astigmatism, something IOLs have not been all that successful at doing in the past. IOLs are the artificial lenses used to replace a patient's natural lens during cataract surgery.

If you have moderate to severe astigmatism, you likely experience blurry vision that you correct with contact lenses or prescription eyeglasses. A new March 2009 study reported in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery confirmed something that most Toric IOL specialists already knew: Toric IOLs can correct astigmatism substantially better than other options, especially the clear corneal incision procedures.

Three months after having cataract surgery and IOL implantations, 70 percent of the patients in the study who received Toric IOLs versus the incision procedure achieved 20/40 vision or better. In addition the Toric IOL patient group performed best when it came to contrast sensitivity at high spatial frequency levels.
