Choosing a LASIK Surgeon
Serving Oklahoma City, Norman, Edmond & nearby areas of Oklahoma
Choosing your LASIK surgeon is perhaps the most important decision you’ll be making once you’ve decided to have LASIK. It’s worth taking some time over, because it will minimize risk and maximize your vision improvement to choose an excellent surgeon. At Hummel Eye Associates in Oklahoma City our surgeons stay up to date with ongoing education and by memberships in their professional organizations.
Talk to friends, family, and coworkers who have had LASIK surgery. They may be able to recommend a good surgeon or steer you away from a bad one. If you normally see an optometrist, rather than an ophthalmologist, for your corrective lenses, he or she may be able to recommend a good LASIK surgeon.
Experience is the key to safe and successful LASIK surgery. Your LASIK surgeon should have performed at least 1,000 LASIK surgeries. Don’t feel shy about asking your potential surgeons how many times they’ve performed LASIK.
Focus on LASIK
LASIK should be a big part of your surgeon’s practice, but not the only part. Your surgeon should be experienced in and comfortable with performing alternative procedures. LASIK may not be right for you. You should choose a surgeon who will be honest with you and who can perform the best procedure for you.
Your LASIK surgeon should be involved in your eye care before, during, and after your procedure. This means that he or she should participate in your evaluation and post-operative care, not just the surgery itself.
Cost should not be a factor when it comes to your vision. Beware of doctors offering bargain basement discounts and deals. While expense may be a real concern for you, good financing options are almost always available.
Good LASIK surgeons are proud of their work, and satisfied patients are excited about the impact that improved vision has had on their lives. Ask your prospective surgeon if you can talk to other patients who have undergone LASIK surgery.
Open, honest, and a good listener
Your LASIK surgeon should understand your personal goals, be willing to thoroughly answer all of your questions, and address all of your concerns. He or she should explain the procedure, what kind of results you can expect, and what you must do after surgery to ensure proper healing. He or she should also inform you of any alternatives which may be more appropriate for your unique situation. You should come away from every visit feeling comfortable and fully informed.
So go ahead and schedule consultations with everyone on your short list, and compare the way they treat you, the way their office appears to be run, how their respective staff people treat you, and how safe and informed you feel after the consultation. You’ll know it was time well spent when you wake up the day after your LASIK surgery seeing the world clearly and feeling no pain!
We have testimonials you can read, an Initial Consultation page, and a What to Expect page which will help you learn more about us. When you’re ready, give us a call, or email us to set up your consultation.
