Thousands of Oklahomans have been given excellent vision by having refractive surgery performed by Dr. Chris Hummel. Traditional LASIK and corrective lenses improve vision by addressing the refractive errors which cause nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. Those three vision problems are known as the lower order aberrations. Custom LASIK goes beyond them, improving visual quality by correcting high order aberrations.
Higher order aberrations diminish visual quality by creating problems such as:
- Reduced night vision
- Decreased contrast
- Double vision
These problems are not measured in visual acuity tests (eye chart tests). You can have these problems and still have 20/20 vision.
Mapping your eyes
Using the same technology which is used to adjust high-powered telescopes, we measure how light passes through your eye. This allows us to create a 3-D map, which highlights all of the specific and subtle distortions of light occurring in your individual eyes. This map is then used to guide the laser during your custom LASIK procedure, ensuring precise correction of your unique vision problems.
Custom LASIK does not require general anesthesia. You will be awake during the procedure. We will administer an oral sedative to help you relax, and numbing eye drops to prevent discomfort.
- Dr. Hummel will create a small flap in your cornea.
- A cool beam, ultraviolet laser, called the VISX Excimer laser, is used to reshape your cornea. The information from the map made of your eyes has been programmed into the laser and now guides it.
- The flap is replaced and bonds naturally with no need for stitches.
For some people, Custom LASIK is about twenty five times more precise than traditional LASIK surgery. It is an excellent way to improve both visual acuity and the quality of your vision, giving you freedom from glasses and contact lenses. However, your eyes are unique. Custom LASIK may not be the right procedure for you. After evaluating your eyes and your individual vision problems, Dr. Hummel can determine whether or not you will benefit from custom LASIK, and if not, he will recommend the alternative which will deliver your best possible vision.
Custom LASIK is a highly sophisticated procedure, and can give a very precise result for you. You can read about its risks and safety, or you could just call or email us today to set up your free initial consultation. We’ll answer all your questions clearly at that time.
