Frequently Asked LASIK Questions

1. How long does the LASIK procedure take?

Usually the surgery takes about five minutes or less for each eye. There’ll also be preparation beforehand, and some monitoring and follow-up afterwards.

2. Is LASIK painful?

No. Although you will be awake, we will administer numbing eye drops so that you do not actually feel the surgery. We will also give you an oral sedative to reduce any anxiety. You may experience a mild burning and foreign body sensation during the first few hours after surgery.

3. Will my eyes look different after the surgery?

Oklahoma City LASIKNo, LASIK does not change the appearance of your eyes. It changes the way they bend light rays, by vaporizing tiny bits of the cornea. But this subtle change in the shape of your eyes is not visible to anyone looking at you.

4. How soon can I wear makeup again?

Dr. Hummel advises patients to avoid eye makeup and mascara for one week. Used eye makeup harbors bacteria, so we recommend using brand new cosmetic products after your procedure, to minimize the risk of infection.

5. When can I get back to my normal activities?

Most people can go back to work and drive one or two days after surgery. Swimming should be avoided for at least two weeks, and contact sports should be avoided for several weeks.

6. Are the results permanent?

The results of LASIK are permanent, but your eyes will still experience the normal effect of aging. The lens of your eye may develop cataract and other changes, such as glaucoma need to be monitored. Of course, cataracts can be surgically treated and Dr. Hummel is also a cataract specialist.
