Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?
Determining whether you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery is very important to ensuring that you get the best possible results from your laser vision correction. When performed on good candidates, Laser eye surgery can have a successful treatment rate of 95% or better. With the most recent advances in technology, nearly everyone who has myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism who has not had previous refractive surgery is a candidate for laser eye surgery today.
There are, however, some exceptions. In general, these exceptions include:
- Children under the age of 18
- People whose eyeglasses or contact lens prescription has not been stable for at least a year, including variations as a result of
- Youth — people in their 20s sometimes experience variations in eyesight
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Medications
- Diabetes or other diseases that cause hormone fluctuations
- Herpes sufferers whose eyes have been affected by the condition
- Sufferers of glaucoma or ocular hypertension
- People who have had previous eye surgeries, eye injuries, or are at an elevated risk of eye injury as a result of a hobby or occupation such as boxing, wrestling, or martial arts
These exceptions are given here in general terms, and more specific information is available during your laser eye surgery consultation with Oklahoma City LASIK surgeon Dr. Chris Hummel.
Some people are good candidates for one type of laser eye surgery but not others. In general, people with thin corneas or large pupils and sufferers of keratoconus are better candidates for PRK than LASIK. PRK is only effective in treating the early stages of keratoconus.
