If you are considering LASIK surgery for the life-changing vision correction it can provide, you probably want to find out everything you can about the procedure first. Unfortunately, there is both good and bad information available, especially online.
Here, we will dispel a few of the myths about LASIK.
Myth #1: LASIK is too new of a technology for any surgeon to have a long record of experience.
Fact: LASIK surgery has been in use in the U.S. for more than 15 years now, and more than one million LASIK procedures are performed each year. Dr. Chris Hummel has been practicing LASIK since its FDA approval in 1995.
Myth #2: Anyone over the age of 18 can have LASIK.
Fact: Not every patient is a good candidate for LASIK. However, advances in technology today have made the procedure an option for more and more patients. One of the most important factors for candidacy remains stable vision. You must have had no changes in your prescription for at least 12 months.
Myth #3: LASIK surgery needs to be redone every few years.
Fact: The results of LASIK surgery are permanent. In a small percentage of patients (less than 3 percent), a fine-tuning procedure may be recommended for the maximum vision correction.
Myth #4: The risk of complications and blindness after LASIK is high.
Fact: There are inherent risks associated with LASIK. However, LASIK is known as one of the safest elective procedures performed in the U.S. today, with a low rate of complications (one-half of 1 percent). Furthermore, there has never been a documented U.S. case of blindness caused by LASIK.
Myth #5: All LASIK doctors are the same, so finding the cheapest offer out there is safe.
Fact: Use caution when dealing with discount centers. Patient screening and follow-up care are key factors in safe LASIK procedures. Those issues can be short-changed when a price sounds too good to be true.
