LASIK is one of the most commonly performed elective surgeries, and roughly a million Americans each year discover the freedom of clear vision without corrective lenses. If you’re considering LASIK, it’s important to take the time to understand the procedure before your initial consultation so that you can come ready to discuss LASIK with your eye doctor. To schedule a free consultation and find out if LASIK is right for you, please contact Hummel Eye Associates today at 405-546-3636 to schedule your Oklahoma City LASIK consultation.
If you’re considering LASIK surgery, use this handy checklist to find out if it may be right for you.
☑ Are you a good LASIK candidate?
A good LASIK candidate should meet the following minimum criteria:
● At least 18 years old
● Stable vision prescription for a year or more
● Not pregnant or nursing, with no plans to become pregnant until after the surgery
● Pupil diameter less than a certain size
● Corneas that are sufficiently thick to accommodate the small flap that your LASIK surgeon creates
● Little to no corneal scarring
Dr. Hummel will discuss your goals and expectations and learn more about your medical history. If he determines that LASIK is not your best option, Dr. Hummel may recommend other procedures like PRK.
☑ What is LASIK surgery?
LASIK is a revolutionary procedure in which a skilled eye surgeon reshapes the cornea using a precision excimer laser. The entire LASIK surgery takes less than an hour and starts with anesthetic drops to numb your eyes. The doctor then creates a small flap in your cornea to permit access by the excimer laser. The laser then carefully reshapes your cornea to correct the refractive errors that cause your vision problems. After reshaping, the corneal flap is closed, and you spend some time in our recovery room before being sent home.
☑ Are you comfortable with your ophthalmologist?
Remember, you are entrusting your vision to another human being, albeit a highly trained and experienced human being. It’s important that you and your eye surgeon establish a comfortable relationship so that you are able to voice any concerns or questions you have. Since 1969, our practice has proudly served the people of Oklahoma City, and we are confident that you will find our experienced LASIK surgeons to be professional, informative, and caring.
☑ Do you understand the pre- and post-operative expectations?
After Dr. Hummel has approved your LASIK candidacy at your initial LASIK consultation, you will be given specific instructions to be followed before your surgery. This includes avoiding facial cosmetics and not wearing your contact lenses. Once your surgery is complete, you will be discharge wearing a protective eye shield, and you’ll need to arrange to have a friend drive you home. You’ll probably need a few days to recover, and you may need to self-administer eye drops for a few days or weeks after surgery.
LASIK has a proven track record of safety and efficacy and has helped millions free themselves from the burden of glasses and contacts. If you’re ready to learn more about LASIK, please contact Hummel Eye Associates today at 405-546-3636 to schedule an appointment in our Oklahoma City office.
