Choosing a LASIK surgeon
If you are considering LASIK, one of the biggest decisions you will have to make, and possibly the most important, is who will perform the surgery. Choosing an experienced and skilled LASIK surgeon will keep your risks to a bare minimum and greatly increase your chances of achieving the outcome you desire.
LASIK vs. PRK
When choosing between LASIK and PRK, most patients will choose LASIK surgery. But if you are not a good candidate for LASIK, PRK may be more appropriate. It is a safe and effective procedure which delivers comparable results. Both procedures have their risks and advantages.
Why Custom LASIK?
Custom LASIK takes the achievements of LASIK to the next level. For some patients, it provides excellent, clear vision with even more success than traditional LASIK, by addressing the finest details of vision and going beyond visual acuity to visual quality. At Hummel Eye Associates, we use the VISX CustomVue system, a highly sophisticated technology which integrates an excimer laser, computer, microscope, comfortable patient bed, and other tools needed by the surgeon.
The excimer laser is well-suited for vision surgery, as it produces a cool beam in pulses that last only a few billionths of a second each. Such speed enables extraordinary precision of surgical work. It can correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism in a minute or less.

Am I a LASIK candidate?
If you are ready to see your best, and in good general health, chances are you are a good candidate for LASIK. Most refractive error can be resolved or improved with LASIK surgery. However, it is not the ideal procedure for everyone.
Find out if you are a good candidate for LASIK by reading our Am I a LASIK Candidate? page.
Monovision
Monovision is a LASIK alternative if you suffer from presbyopia. It does not actually correct presbyopia, but can improve your vision. Presbyopia affects most people as they get older. It usually set in when you are in your forties. It mimics hyperopia, but has a different cause. It can occur with myopia, and this is when monovision is the most helpful.
