Monovision LASIK
In Oklahoma City and Edmond, Oklahoma
Monovision LASIK is an alternative for patients who are affected by presbyopia. Dr. Chris Hummel has been offering it to Oklahoma residents for many years now. It does not actually correct presbyopia, as no current laser procedure can do that, but it can correct your vision. Presbyopia creeps up on all of us after we reach our forties., as we lose the ability to change our focus from distance to near objects.
What is monovision?
Monovision LASIK corrects the prescription in one eye for distance vision and undercorrects the other eye so that you can focus up close.
How it works
With monovision you will essentially choose one eye for different functions. Normally we see with both eyes, but everyone has a dominant and non-dominant eye. Think about looking through the lens of a camera – you will usually use either the right or left eye consistently. When one eye produces a clearer image the brain automatically chooses the image from that eye. Following monovision correcting, both eyes will continue to function at all times, but you will only register the best image.
Why choose monovision?
Monovision can mean freedom from bifocals or reading glasses. Reading glasses and bifocals can be even more inconvenient than other corrective lenses. They might not be worn all the time, so you might put them down somewhere are forget where. Then you find yourself hunting around for them an hour later. Also, some people feel that they are a sign of aging and find them embarrassing.
Monovision disadvantages
Since the brain normally uses the combination of images from both eyes for depth perception, you may find that your depth perception is compromised in some situations.
As you age your near vision will continue to deteriorate and you may need a follow up procedure later in life to maintain your best vision.
Are the results immediate?
You can expect to see a dramatic improvement in your vision within twenty four hours after LASIK surgery. Using the Visx Advanced CustomVue system, Dr. Hummel is equipped to give each patient a treatment pattern customized to your unique needs.
What if I don’t like the results?
Most patients are very happy with the results of monovision. Before scheduling your monovision LASIK, Dr. Hummel will have you try monovision correction with contact lenses to be certain you can adapt. If you choose monovision, but find that you cannot adjust or do not like the results, your non-dominant eye can be corrected for distance vision.
