Questions to Ask Your Eye Doctor
Dr, Chris Hummel encourages patients to take an active role in your own vision care. The more you learn, the more you’re likely to be happy with the results. At Hummel Eye Associates, we encourage all our patients to be pro-active, to ask questions, and to let us know any time they feel concerns about their vision.
Selecting an eye surgeon, especially for a specific procedure, like LASIK or cataract surgery, means finding one with experience who answers your questions and makes you feel confident and relaxed. An experienced and reputable eye surgeon like Dr. Chris Hummel will not be offended if you ask about his background, or the rate of complications among his LASIK patients.
Your initial consultation with an eye surgeon should include discussion about which procedure would be best for you, and what your personal chances are of achieving clear vision. Keep in mind that every pair of eyes is unique, and each of us responds individually to an eye surgery. There’s no standard result that everyone can expect.
The doctor’s experience
You can be direct, and ask your doctor how many procedures her or she has performed (of the kind you need), and how long he or she has been performing them. Ask the doctor at a chain-store LASIK how many procedures he has performed in his private practice. Dr. Chris Hummel has performed several thousand refractive procedures over the past few years.
Success
Ask what percentage of patients have had successful procedures of the type you have in mind, and how many have had serious complications. Dr. Hummel will show you a video, in his own words that explains all the risks and benefits of your procedure.
Before, during and after
Be sure to get detailed instructions on what you need to do before and after your procedure. Find out how long it will take to recover, what recovery will be like, and when you can return to your normal activities. This could make a big difference in scheduling for you. Most of our LASIK and cataract patients are able to drive themselves to the one day post-op appointment.
Technology
Ask your doctor about the technology he or she will be using. Read up on it. Learn all that you can. You will feel much more comfortable with your procedure armed with this knowledge. You can even ask to see it ahead of time, and if you’re interviewing potential eye doctors, some will let you sit in to watch someone being given the procedure that you’d like to have. Keep in mind that any computerized laser is still an instrument that requires the skills of an experienced surgeon.
Financing
Cost should never stand in the way of your best vision and eye care. We have only one pair of eyes, so why put them at any risk? Ask your doctor what your procedure will cost and if financing is available. You can read more about Hummel Eye Associates financing options on this page.
Here are some pages with questions about specific procedures:
LASIK
cataracts

The best kind of patient is an educated one, so please go ahead and do any reading and online searching you’d like. It can never hurt to know more about medical treatments and surgeries. If you contact us to schedule your free initial consultation, we’ll answer all your questions clearly, and if you think of more later on, you can always use our online question form, or call us again.
