Refractive surgery is used to fix refractive errors on your cornea that cause poor vision. There are several forms of refractive surgery, but LASIK laser eye surgery is by far the most famous and popular. Millions of men and women have been freed from their dependence on prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses with LASIK and other surgical options. If you suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia, then refractive surgery can be done to correct these imperfections and give you better vision.
Surgical vision correction is not a new concept. The history of refractive surgery goes back centuries. In the early 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci was researching refractive error, and the history of cataract surgery goes back even further. Refractive surgery is continuously evolving and huge advances were made in the 1980s and 90s.
LASIK was developed in 1991 and has since given tens of millions the freedom of unencumbered vision. There are more than 30 lasers approved for this form of eye surgery, and Custom LASIK is a great way to ensure that you have 20/20 eyesight or better.

How Does Refractive Surgery Work?
Whether you are having LASIK or PRK, refractive surgery works by reshaping your cornea to correct your vision. Nearsightedness is caused by a steep curvature on your cornea or a longer eye. Farsightedness is caused by a flat corneal surface or short eye, and astigmatism is produced by selective irregularities on your cornea. Refractive surgery corrects the curve of your cornea and in the case of astigmatism, makes the surface smooth and symmetrical. Intraocular lens implants (IOLs) are also used to improve vision during cataract surgery.
Refractive surgery might be a good option for you if:
· You are nearsighted, farsighted, have astigmatism or presbyopia.
· You do not have age-related cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma or other eye diseases, infections or conditions.
· You are 18 or older.
· Your vision has been stable for at least one year.
