What are Toric IOL's?

Oklahoma City Toric IOL patientAn Intraocular Lens (IOL) is a synthetic lens used to replace a patient's natural lens during cataract surgery. Up until now, IOLs could typically only correct farsightedness or nearsightedness, but not astigmatism.

In the past, patients with astigmatism had to continue to wear corrective glasses or contacts after their IOL surgery or investigate the possibilities of laser vision correction, such as LASIK, Custom LASIK, or PRK. One other option eye surgeons have tried in the past decade was making an incision in the cornea to correct astigmatism.

But now, thanks to the advanced technology of premium Toric IOLs, astigmatism can be corrected with a lens exchange as well.

That's good news for the estimated 20 to 30 percent of all U.S. cataract patients who also have a large degree of astigmatism.

Astigmatism results in blurred and distorted vision, caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. A normal patient's cornea is round, while a patient with astigmatism has a cornea that is oblong-shaped, like a football. Toric IOLs are specifically designed to correct the vision imbalance caused by an oblong-shaped cornea.

Toric IOLs are:

  • Soft, foldable lenses that are easily inserted and implanted in the eye.
  • Made of safe, non-toxic materials (silicone or acrylic).
  • Proven effective.
  • Removable (if necessary).
  • Often the best solution for complete vision improvement for patients with both cataracts and astigmatism.

There are two kinds of Toric IOLs:

  • The STAAR® Toric IOL™
  • The AcrySof® Toric IOL™

Is a Toric IOL Right for You?

To determine if a Toric IOL is the right option for you, our highly skilled eye surgeons and staff will perform tests, before your cataract surgery, to see if you have moderate or high astigmatism. If you do, a Toric IOL may be appropriate.
