What to Expect

Oklahoma LASIK Eye SurgeryYou will experience the best possible results from LASIK if you know what to expect before, during, and after surgery. When you schedule your procedure, Dr. Chris Hummel at Hummel Eye Associates in Oklahoma City will go over all of these details with you, and give you instructions on how to prepare for surgery and how to care for your eyes while they heal.

Before LASIK
We will perform a thorough eye exam, test your vision and map your eyes. In order to get accurate measurements of your cornea, we must ask you to stop wearing contact lenses for some time before we do this. That’s because contact lenses alter the shape of your cornea.

Different types of contacts will affect the shape of your eyes for different amounts of time. So depending on which type of contact lenses you wear, you should plan to switch to reading glasses according to these timeframes:

  • Soft contacts – one week before evaluation
  • Toric contacts – two weeks before evaluation
  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP) – wear them in for your initial screening
  • Hard contacts – wear them in for your initial screening

We also ask that you avoid using creams, lotions, perfumes, and makeup the day of your surgery. This will prevent these irritating, and possibly infection-causing, substances from getting into your eyes during and after the procedure.

During the LASIK procedure
LASIK surgery itself takes only a few minutes per eye, but you should plan on spending a couple of hours at the laser center.

We will give you an oral sedative to help you relax and administer numbing eye drops before the procedure begins.

You will be awake during the procedure. Dr. Hummel will ask you to look at a light and try not to move your eyes during the procedure. You will not feel anything and the procedure is very quick.

After LASIK
As the numbing drops wear off, you may experience some mild discomfort and your eyes may feel a bit dry. This will go away in a few hours. You may notice an immediate improvement in vision, but you may also experience some blurriness at first. This is normal.

We will give you antibiotics to prevent infection and eye shields to protect your eyes and keep the flap from being disturbed while it heals.

You will notice a dramatic improvement in vision within twenty four hours, and should be able to return to your normal activities the day after surgery.
